The Nograles Bill pushes for a 100% ownership of land in the country by foreign firms or corporation. This idea of 100% ownership of land by foreigners makes me squirm. How did this idea get into the Speaker's head?

Should the Nograles Bill get passed into law, can't you imagine right now a queue of foreign firms buying land, then more land, until nothing is left to the Filipino?

The other annoying move is that of Cong. Luis Villafuerte who thinks Congress can just
amend the constitution through a constituent assembly.. What happened to these people's oath taking before they assumed office? Is this move by Cong. Villafuerte in a supposed to be democratic country something we taxpayers deserve? In his heart of hearts, is there no more nerve that feels for what truly is the spirit of a people's crafted amendment?

Senator Pimentel's Right to Reply Bill is another piece of a proposed legislation that is brazenly a travesty of the inherent freedom of the press and the other medium of communication. Why are our so-called voices in our institutions of democracy not listening to us? They are supposed to be doing things in our name.

<!--

Michelle is the associate editor of interactive for EatingWell Media Group. In between editing and writing, she enjoys sampling the tasty results of the easy, healthy recipes that the EatingWell Test Kitchen cooks are working on.

7 anti-aging super foods

Chocolate & Nut Butter Bites

A few weeks ago I was using my flat iron and when I looked in the mirror to admire my ’do, I discovered my first gray hair (gasp!). It was the first time I was visibly confronted with the reality that, surprise, I will age, and I’m not 18 anymore no matter how good I feel.
I already have the exercise part down, so on my quest for a fountain of youth I’m paying more attention to research on how to eat to age healthfully. The best information I’ve found? 7 anti-aging super foods and recipes to enjoy them in, from Peter Jaret’s James Beard Foundation award-winning article in EatingWell Magazine, “The Search for the Anti-Aging Diet.”
Read on to find out more about the 7 foods to keep you young:

Chocolate
The Kuna people of the San Blas islands, off the coast of Panama, have a rate of heart disease that is nine times less than that of mainland Panamanians. The reason? The Kuna drink plenty of a beverage made with generous proportions of cocoa, which is unusually rich in flavanols that help preserve the healthy function of blood vessels. Maintaining youthful blood vessels lowers risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia.
Get sweet satisfaction in seconds with delicious chocolate recipes, such as Chocolate & Nut Butter Bites (which include two of the 7 anti-aging super foods!):
Chocolate & Nut Butter Bites
8 1/4-ounce squares of bittersweet chocolate
4 teaspoons almond, cashew or pistachio butter
Top each chocolate square with 1/2 teaspoon nut butter of your choice (almond, cashew, pistachio). Two sandwiches make one serving.
Per serving: 79 calories; 6 g fat (2 g sat, 1 g mono); 0 mg cholesterol; 9 g carbohydrate; 1 g protein; 1 g fiber; 12 mg sodium; 20 mg potassium. What you get: Magnesium, copper, chromium. 1/2 Carbohydrate Serving. Exchanges: 1/2 other carbohydrate, 1 fat.

Blueberries
In a landmark study published in 1999, researchers at Tufts University’s Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging fed rats blueberry extract for a period of time that in “rat lives” is equivalent to 10 human years. These rats outperformed rats fed regular chow on tests of balance and coordination when they reached old age. Compounds in blueberries (and other berries) mitigate inflammation and oxidative damage, which are associated with age-related deficits in memory and motor function. Eat more blueberries with healthy blueberry recipes.

Fish
Thirty years ago, researchers began to study why the native Inuits of Alaska were remarkably free of heart disease. The reason, scientists now think, is the extraordinary amount of fish they consume. Fish is an abundant source of omega-3 fats, which help prevent cholesterol buildup in arteries and protect against abnormal heart rhythms. Eat some tonight with a healthy fish recipe.

Nuts
Studies of Seventh-Day Adventists (a religious denomination that emphasizes healthy living and a vegetarian diet) show that those who eat nuts gain, on average, an extra two and a half years. Nuts are rich sources of unsaturated fats, so they offer benefits similar to those associated with olive oil. They’re also concentrated sources of vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals, including antioxidants.

Wine
Drinking alcohol in moderation protects against heart disease, diabetes and age-related memory loss. Any kind of alcoholic beverage seems to provide such benefits, but red wine has been the focus of much of the research. Red wine contains resveratrol, a compound that likely contributes to its benefits-and, according to animal studies, may activate genes that slow cellular aging.

Olive Oil
Four decades ago, researchers from the Seven Countries Study concluded that the monounsaturated fats in olive oil were largely responsible for the low rates of heart disease and cancer on the Greek island of Crete. Now we know that olive oil also contains polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that may help prevent age-related diseases.

Yogurt
In the 1970s, Soviet Georgia was rumored to have more centenarians per capita than any other country. Reports at the time claimed that the secret of their long lives was yogurt, a food ubiquitous in their diets. While the age-defying powers of yogurt never have been proved directly, yogurt is rich in calcium, which helps stave off osteoporosis and contains “good bacteria” that help maintain gut health and diminish the incidence of age-related intestinal illness.

By Michelle Edelbaum

Michelle is the associate editor of interactive for EatingWell Media Group. I have known malunggay since childhood and I am convinced of its medicinal value. Here's the article:

MALUNGGAY: NATURE'S MEDICINE CABINET

By Henrylito D. Tacio

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away," so goes a popular saying in the
United States. Here, in the Philippines, the plant that can do the same
trick is the common malunggay (known in the science world as 'Moringa
oleifera'). Malunggay is so rich in nutrients and vitamins that its image
is used as the official logo of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute
(FNRI) of the Department of Science and Technology.

Touted by scientists as "miracle vegetable," malunggay has been promoted
by no less than the World Health Organization (WHO) as a low-cost health
enhancer in poor countries around the globe. It is getting raves in
western countries where the National Science Foundation, National
Geographic Society and the Andrew Mellon Foundation in the United States
are reportedly financing scientists to collect the world's 13 malunggay
species.

Why so much ado about malunggay? As one doctor in Senegal (West Africa)
puts it: "We have always had problems with the classical approach to
treating malnourished children. This was based on industrial products:
whole milk powder, vegetable oil and sugar. All these things are
expensive. When you tell a parent to go out and buy these things – this
can be truly costly for him. On the other hand, with moringa the resource
is locally available. The people themselves can produce it. We have done
experiments in treating malnourished children with this plant and the
results have been really spectacular. "

No wonder then that during the Marcos administration, there was a craze
about malunggay , being a solution to the malnutrition problem in the
countryside. In fact, the president himself was a malunggay addict,
consuming soup littered with green leaves in every meal in addition to the
legendary 'saluyot' and 'labong' (bamboo shoots) as his main fare.

In the Philippines, bunches of malunggay leaves are available in many
markets, priced below many other leaf vegetables. The leaves are most
often added to a broth to make a simple, and highly nutritious soup. The
leaves are also sometimes used as a characteristic ingredient in 'tinola'
-- a traditional chicken dish, composed of chicken in a broth, malunggay
leaves, and either green papaya or another secondary vegetable.

But despite its legendary potentials, malunggay is still relatively
unknown. "The sale of all forms of vitamins, minerals, and health
supplements is a big business," points out Moringa Zinga, an American
company that promotes and sells malunggay products in capsules. "If you
are a company selling hundreds of nutritional products, why would you sell
a product that will wipe out all your other products? This is true for the
pharmaceutical industries as well. These industries would rather that the
general public remains ignorant about the moringa leaves."

Nutritionists aver that 100 grams of malunggay leaves yield the following:
75 calories of energy (higher than ampalaya, squash, tomatoes, or
carrots), 5.9 grams protein (higher than cauliflower, lettuce, or
mustard), 12.8 grams carbohydrate (higher than okra, papaya, or
watermelon), 353 milligrams calcium (higher than gabi leaves, mung beans,
squash, and camote tops), 3.7 milligrams niacin (higher than other
vegetables analyzed). And for thiamin, phosphorus, and ascorbic acid,
malunggay is at the top of the list.

In addition, nutritionists affirm that 200 grams of malunggay leaves would
give a nutritive value roughly equivalent to four eggs and two glasses of
milk. Its iron compound prevents deficiency of red blood cells known as
anemia. And being a very rich source of calcium, it aids in maintaining
healthy bones and teeth.

Malunggay is also rich in vitamin A (higher than red and green mung beans,
radish, or eggplant), thus helping prevent xerophthalmia, a disease of the
eye. Adults are urged to eat malunggay leaves as its vitamin C content
is higher than those of ampalaya leaves. Vitamin C may protect against
declining mental ability and stroke. In studies with elderly people,
researchers found that low vitamin C levels contributed to shower
reasoning skills, which was a strong factor in their dying from stroke.

Malunggay is often called as the "mother's best friend." For lactating
mothers, malunggay helps produce vitamin-rich milk for the baby.
Nutritionists claim that its calcium content is four times those found in
milk.

"Due to its high vitamins A, C, and E, which are very potent
antioxidants, " reports FNRI's Dr. Lydia M. Marero, " malunggay is a very
good quencher of unstable free radicals that can react with and damage
molecules that cause aging. Antioxidants reduce the appearance of wrinkles
and fine lines. They also prevent the onset of various chronic diseases
like arthritis, cancer, and heart and kidney diseases."

Dr. Marero also reports that malunggay contains the phytochemical
niaziminin, which is found to have molecular components that can prevent
the development of cancer cells and correlated with inhibitory ability
against superoxide generation. The first naturally-occurring
thiocarbamates, novel hypotensive agents niazinin A, niazinin B,
niazimicin and niaziminin A and B were isolated from malunggay.

There are even more health benefits. Vivencio Mamaril, of Bureau of
Plant Industry, told a national daily that in India, malunggay is used in
treating various ailments. A 2001 study in India has found that the
fresh root of the young tree can be used to treat a fever. Asthmatics
are advised to drink the infusion from the roots of the plant.

Tender malunggay leaves also reduce phlegm and are administered internally
for scurvy and catarrhal conditions, while the flowers are used to heal
inflammation of the tendons and abscesses. Unripe pods of malunggay can
prevent intestinal worms, while the fruit also prevents eye disorders.

On September 14, 2007, Senator Loren Legarda campaigned for the
popularization of malunggay, after a recent scientific report that it
boosts male potency. She asked the government to make malunggay among its
priority crops for propagation. Research at the Bureau of Plant Industry
(BPI) found that a steady consumption of its fruit "helps to raise sperm
count and mobility, which both translate to increased opportunity for the
sperm to fertilize an egg." This is good news for men who may not be
able to sire children. They can now count on the malunggay to work its
magic on them.

Dr. Kumar Pati, an Indian doctor who is an expert in natural medicine
reports that because of its nutritional content, malunggay strengthens the
immune system, controls blood pressure, relieves headaches and migraines,
manages the sugar level thereby preventing diabetes, reduces inflammations
and arthritis pains, restricts the growth of tumors, and heals ulcers.

Unknown to many Filipinos, malunggay has the ability to purify water.
"The crushed moringa seeds can clear very turbid water," said Dr. John
Sutherland, of Leicester University's Department of Environmental
Technology. He added that powdered malunggay seeds are appropriate for
water purification in rural areas of tropical countries.

Planting malunggay trees can also help stabilize soil and contribute to
fight against deforestation. The malunggay tree is highly resistant to
drought and needs little care. It is fast-growing and lives for average
of 50 years. Each tree can produce approximately 10,000 seeds a year.
It also makes an excellent fuel and fertilizer.###
<!--

This way of looking at things is still true in China, according to some readings on Chinese contemporary culture. In the Philippines, 20 years ago, the reverence for elders in the cities was almost the same as in the rural areas. Things have changed so fast.

It looks like the present generation doesn't have the same degree of valuing of older people anymore. This regression is partly due to the "youth mania". It is as if life has only one season - the season of youth. If we look at the television programs all over the world, the compulsion to be young is in every content of both programs and advertisements. The viewer who delves into the meaning of things will surely scratch his/her head in frustration. The quest for meaning becomes a difficult task especially for the young.

Just what happened to the refinements of the human spirit? When schools and opinion-making institutions cop out because of the "youth mania"and relent to the run-of-the mill thinking process, a precious thought in society starts to be buried alive. Without a group that will slowly build a movement that will challenge present thinking, society will continue to regress. Then, when we see old people in the streets begging or old people wishing they died along with those who went to the other shore earlier, we will look at these things as normal.

When society thinks that begging by old people in the streets is normal, that is a time to be scared about.
<!--

This kept on until I learned about alternative healing techniques like pranic healing, accupuncture and massage. And lately, I discovered a very effective healing technique - EFT or emotional freedom technique.EFT is one of the great discoveries in alternative healing. Imagine having an asthma attack with nothing in your bag to stop your whizzing and shortness of breath! What I did was tapped all the points in my body that I needed to tap until my asthma calmed down. I did a number of rounds of tapping, of course. But what was amazing was that more and more I was able to prove to myself that this concept of energy blocks inside my energy system was true. EFT helped me unblock the energy paths until I was able to breathe normally again.

The usefulness of EFT is in being able to understand how the mind becomes so much a part of getting sick and of getting well too. It takes a lot of reprogramming the mind to be able to stop oneself from going to a drugstore, especially, when one has an asthma attack.

EFT has worked for me too when I had flu last year. During the Holy Week break I got flu and wasn't able to leave the city and be home in the countryside to celebrate Easter Sunday with my family. I just sipped lemon juice every hour and did rounds of tapping every hour too while I was lying in bed. When you have flu you are too weak to move around. So I did the tapping while in bed. After three days. I was healthy again.

Whenever I use EFT, I give thanks to the universe that someone like Mr. Craig and Dr. Callahan discovered and developed this healing method. Thank God for them.
<!--

Because of the floods in Legazpi City, the activity I went to Bicol for was canceled. People from all over the Bicol Region could not pass their main highways because of the flood. This situation caused the cancellation of the regional rural congress.

Since I couldn't go back to Manila immediately after the cancellation of the rural congress, I went home to my parents. Home was my family's welcoming arms. The warmth of home was a contrast to the undefined feeling I had while seeing my mother take care of my stepfather who is a stroke survivor. How come that one so strong in the peak of his strength is so helpless now? I found it a difficult feeling to see my stepfather being bathed, fed and taken care of by mother like a toddler. Life indeed has its different seasons.

More than taking care of one's health as a lesson from my stepfather's present situation, is a reaffirmation of my own mortality. I am not always strong. One day I will grow weak. I will be needing other people's care. More than this, I will have to deal with the question of how I spent the time given to me by life. Indeed, I am not a permanent resident of the earth.
<!--

Friends ask: But if you live only for today, how will you achieve your dreams?

My reply: It is precisely why I want to live the fullest of this moment that I am putting block after block to my dreams. You find this mind-boggling? Let me just explain a bit.

When you are distracted from the present moment, your thoughts get scattered. You become like a full blossom played upon by a naughty passer-by. You cease to be a full blossom that very moment that you are declaring your meaning as a blossom. That's true with our thoughts. When we get scattered, we forget to soak into what our thoughts imply. We are more than thoughts. When we allow ourselves to get out of focus, we loosen our grip on the purpose why we are thinking and why we are scattering our thoughts. Does this confuse you more?

What the sages teach us is to savor each present moment for it is only through it that we can say we are truly alive. Because of our gift of presence to who we are, why we are where we are, we are able to go deeper into our feelings. We are able to
feel the language of silence and feel where it leads us. It is in moments of silence and presence that hunches and insights find a place in our being.
<!--

This is one of the laws of Mother Nature. When we live according to the timeless laws of our "Mother" the bond that ties us humans to the trees, water, sun, fire, rocks and the animal kingdom manifests the power of the connectedness of all things.

It has been said by wise men and women that when human beings lived according to the interconnectedness of the web of life, people had no notion of what disease was like. Because people lived according to the universal order of things humans were naturally a part of the environment. There was kinship in the world. Nothing was considered inanimate. The stones had life. The trees had life.

As people started veering away from Mother Earth's flowing breast as Joyce Kilmer would eloquently express in his poem "Trees", the idea of dis-ease and brokenness came to being. And people forgot about the innate power that has always been a part of the external manifestation of the life-force in the universe.

The body, made up of millions of cells that hold the memory of the human story, couldn't have been just flesh and blood without the power of repairing itself. An expression of life so complex in its structure, the human body holds the power to create its own reality. EFT, the subject I discussed briefly in my previous blogs,is a healing technique that is in line with the body's innate power to heal itself. I will discuss my own experience of the power of EFT in my coming blogs.
<!--

Gary Craig, the one who discovered EFT explained that this technique is also known as accupuncture without the needles. The principle involved in the healing process is similar to the principle behind accupuncture. EFT is an energy-based healing technique where self-affirmation is part of the process. If you want to listen to an introduction to EFT, please click the link below and from there surf for links to EFT where there are many in the internet.

http://theisleoflight.com/TalkShows/GaryCraig.mp3
<!--

I suppose most of you have heard of this "organ recital" term which refers to people whose ears, lungs, skin, etc. are no longer as healthy as they used to be. When people with such state of bodily organs meet, most of them are in a choral harmony about this pain here, that disability there, this discomfort here and so forth.

Deepak Chopra, a medical doctor and someone into meditation and other branches of the healing arts, in his book "Ageless Body Timeless Mind, talks about an ageless body and a timeless mind being the result of a shift from the old paradigm on Health and Aging. It's the mind that makes us old, Deepak Chopra teaches.

It is not as if it would benefit us greatly if we deny our age. Denial of the aging process is not the key idea in the shift in paradigm on aging. The point being offered by the concept of an ageless body and a timeless mind is that the body as matter follows thought. It's the mind that is in control of how our body and our mind works. Each of the millions of cells in our body has a memory. The mind has power over every cell. Whatever message the mind sends to the cell is recorded and obeyed. If the mind says "I am old and therefore my health is deteriorating", that is what the cells will follow. The other paradigm teaches us to have power over the matter that our body is as the body is like a genie that says to the mind: "Your wish is my command."
<!--

Understandably so because you see yourself in the shoes of older people. You suddenly feel a sense of kinship with the stroke survivor in the next block; with the lady who just had a cataract operation; with the 70 something who can't travel long distances because of involuntary leaks on her underwear.Age 60 makes you reconcile with your own humanity; with your own mortality.

Yesterday, I was looking around for a condom-sized catheter to be attached to a urine bag for my father who is a stroke survivor for more than a year now. With a catheter
inserted to the most delicate part of his body, he is spared from the embarrassment of incontinence. My mother too is spared from interrupted sleep in the night just so my father won't feel the discomfort of wet sheets.

My father is a lucky guy. Aside from my mother's undying attention and care for him, we, his children, look after his every need to the best we can. Every time I think of him, I think of all the fathers, the widowers and the older bachelors who are in the same situation as my father.

After buying the disposable item from the drugstore, I felt so thirsty I headed to a nearby restaurant for a cup of ice cream or maybe even just a cold drink. I ate my ice cream very quickly because I needed to go back to the office to pick up some stuff. As it is natural for 60 something women, I had to go to the ladies room before leaving the restaurant. It was a tranquil afternoon. There was no queue to put me under stress. But as soon as I was about to enter the now unoccupied room, the occupant who just got out slumped his tired body on the wall with a sigh. "I feel very dizzy", the woman said. "Can I help you", I asked. "Do you have vicks or something that I can smell?" "Nothing in my bag", I said. Because of that scenario I was in, I brought the weak woman to one of the empty tables in the restaurant and applied my basic reflexology on a point between her thumb and forefinger. I asked her where she came from. "From Southern Luzon", she said. "My parents' home", I said. "Where in Southern Luzon?" "Near Mayon Volcano"."So we are from the same place!"

As she was recovering from her nausea, she cried and showed me her back pack that was slashed by a thug in the jeepney. She was inconsolable because all the money which was supposed to be his father's pension money which she was authorized to follow up in Manila was all gone. She felt so helpless she couldn't buy a bus ticket. If I were in her shoes right that moment, I would wish someone, with no much ado, just handed me money for a bus ticket for me to travel the 500 kilometers from Manila to the town near Mayon Volcano. I knew I still had some money in my wallet. I took five hundred pesos and gave it to her. She was so thankful she told me she'd come back to Manila to pay me. I told her not to worry.

When I think of her I could not but wish someone was always around to help me cope with stress if I were in a situation like her.
<!--
